Canopy Growth Corporation is the largest producer of medical cannabis in Canada. Their core brands Tweed and Bedrocan are two of the country’s most important and largest cannabis brands. In a move to expand their global footprint, the Ontario-based corporation recently purchased German company MedCann for 7.2 million dollars.
MedCann has been importing two varieties of medical cannabis since the middle of 2016. At German pharmacies, patients with an “exemption permission for self-therapy with cannabis” can buy MedCann’s imports for 15 Euro / gram. Up to now, German patients have been able to purchase “Princeton” and “Argyle” strains;”Penelope” and “Houndstooth” are on the way. In U.S. shops and dispensaries, the four strains are known as “Nordle,” “Ghost Train Haze,” “CBD Skunk Haze” and “Super Lemon Haze.”
MedCann co-founder and CEO Pierre Debs is “quite pleased” with Canopy’s newest partner. He told Marijuana.com that “despite new ownership everything will remain the same when it comes to operating the business.”
Because Germany still lacks a domestic cannabis industry and cannabis imports from the medical Dutch cannabis program do not cover the demands of German patients, the German and Canadian governments agreed last summer to allow imports from Canada’s Licensed Producers. In addition to MedCann, Pedanios, a Berlin-based company, also recently received an import license. According to Pedanios CEO Patrick Hoffman, the company will offer five strains of Peace Naturals products, which have been bred specifically for the German market.
