Just when all of the recreational licensed growers of Oregon were on the edge of panicking about where their upcoming harvest was going to land, the state announced its approval of 10 testing labs and 26 retail location licenses.
This comes after a few months of consistent criticism of the system — the majority of people doubting the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) would be able to grant testing and retail licenses in time for the near-approaching outdoor harvest.
But they made it! Ahead of schedule, actually. While they made many recreational growers, including myself, come close to a panic attack — in the end the OLCC made it happen with an incredibly understaffed operation. Good job, guys!
The 26 recreational marijuana retailers who had their licenses approved today will be able to begin operating on October 1, 2016. Many of these retail outlets are currently medical marijuana dispensaries — in order to move forward with the recreational license, the store owners are required to surrender their Oregon Health Authority Oregon Medical Marijuana Program registration. In other words, stores are forced to choose between medical and recreational retail.
With these new additions, the OLCC has approved a total of 326 licenses across the entire spectrum: producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, and testing labs.
