Oregon on Track to Collect $43.7M in Marijuana Taxes for 2016

The numbers are in from January through the end of July, and so far Oregon has processed $25.5 million in taxes from recreational marijuana sales.

Oregon began collecting a 25% tax on all recreational marijuana sales this January 1, 2016. Since then, Oregon recreational sales have raked in an average of $3.6 million each month, just shy of the Legislative Revenue Office‘s estimate of $3.7 million per month.

Oregon’s marijuana tax gains will be distributed as follows:

  • 40% Common School Fund
  • 20% Mental Health
  • 15% State Police Account
  • 10% Cities
  • 10% Counties
  • 5% Oregon Health Authority

With Oregon likely nearing the half-million mark, and Colorado sure to pass $1 billion in sales in 2016, one can only imagine the revenue potential in a legal California marketplace come 2017.
