In what can be considered the first major announcement since 4/20, when Justin Trudeau said that there would be marijuana legislation in place by Spring 2017, a marijuana task force was unveiled this morning in Canada. This group was formed for the sole purpose of advising the federal government on how to move forward with the historical framework that will be Canada’s recreational industry and the first of the G7 countries to legalize marijuana.
In a surprising and somewhat refreshing twist the feds are also making a big effort to consult with Canadians across the country and get their views on how weed can safely get into the hands of adults while keeping it away from kids.
The task force puts together a group of nine experts to navigate the waters moving forward. The Chair of this new team is Anne McLellan, who is a former Deputy Prime Minister and former Health and Justice Minister. The group is made up of seasoned professionals in public health, substance abuse, law enforcement and justice. “We have confidence that the individuals who make up the Task Force have the expertise, knowledge and credibility necessary to provide us with thoughtful advice on the design of a system of strict marijuana production, distribution, and regulated sales,” said Jody Wilson-Raybould the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.
The task force has also created a website where until August 29th of this year, Canadians can have their say on how they see the marijuana landscape growing across the nation.
This federal team also took the time to weigh in on the unlicensed dispensaries popping up in Toronto and in other metropolitan areas across the country, which is a rare move for them. “It is important for Canadians to remember that while this process unfolds, the current criminal laws on marijuana remain enforced. The Government of Canada supports efforts by federal, provincial and municipal law enforcement to enforce these laws,” said Wilson-Raybould.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more details.
