Many places around the world are slowly passing laws to legalize the use of cannabis. While a few countries have out rightly legalized it, there are still others which are in the process of doing so. And of course it is still illegal in most places. This can lead to some confusion and so here is a quick look at cannabis laws across the world.
1. Uruguay: Uruguay recently became the first country in the world to completely legalize production, possession and distribution of cannabis. Of course this does not mean that coffee houses are going to spring up all over the country. The entire thing is still regulated by the government and only specialized pharmacies will be allowed to sell cannabis. The rules also state that consumers have to be above 18 and Uruguayan citizens. Sales will be limited to 40g per month. Growing weed at home is allowed, but even then there can only be a maximum of 5 plants. Also, the government has clearly stated that they are completely against drug tourism in any form.
2. Colorado, USA: If you are over the age of 21, then it is legal to be in possession of an ounce of marijuana. In a single transaction, you can buy up to a quarter of an ounce. Luckily, these rules apply to both locals as well as tourists. However, if you are under 21 years of age, then it is still illegal to possess or smoke cannabis. But the laws are not very strict and you will generally be let off with a small fine.
3. Netherlands: Everyone knows that the Netherlands is the weed capital of the world, but it is interesting to note that it is still technically illegal there. But of course cannabis use is widely tolerated and within the prescribed amounts, it is completely legal. As long as you are above 18 and have an ID card, you can buy and smoke weed at any of the coffee shops that line the region. You cannot buy more than 5 grams in a single transaction. However, buying off the street is still illegal. Also don’t make the mistake of assuming that it is okay to light up anywhere and everywhere in the country. The No Smoking rule still applies in most pubs and public places.
4. Portugal: Portugal is the only country in the world where all drugs, including hard ones, have been completely decriminalized. This was done in 2001 in an effort to curb rampant drug use and fight the drug mafia. It does seem like the idea has worked well and drug related crimes have been brought down considerably in the country. So this is one place where you can literally light up anywhere and not have to worry about it.
Generally of course, cannabis laws vary from country to country in a big way. Some places where you would not get into too much trouble with weed are Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, Macedonia, Uruguay, India, Venezuela and Russia. Most other places though it is still illegal. Hopefully this should change soon in the coming years.
