Drilling down on global marijuana habits, a new study published by the Smith Institute asserts that British lawmakers should stop fighting the inevitable “Tide” of marijuana’s mainstream acceptance and legalize the calming herb.

After examining cannabis consumption in the UK and abroad, investigating the “vacuum” created by the United Kingdom’s antiquated policy, and examining the future shape of the rapidly growing marijuana industry, the report concludes what most already know:

“The Tide Effect argues strongly that the UK should follow suit, and that the legalisation of cannabis here is both overdue and imperative.”

Embraced by MPs on both sides of the UK’s political aisle, the report titled ‘The Tide Effect: How the World is Changing its Mind on Cannabis’ puts legalization under the microscope of scrutiny. Creating a compelling argument for legalization in the UK, The Tide report looks at these fundamental factors:

1. The British government’s current strategy to curb marijuana consumption has failed.
2. Marijuana reform and regulation offer a healthier alternative than simple decriminalization.
3. Fear-based dialogue needs modifying to match reality.
4. Legalized cannabis in the UK could raise £7 billion per year.
5. Legalization would allow greater scientific scrutiny.
6. Future marijuana policy should be cultivated by the UK’s Department of Health.

Per the institute, the current strategy deployed by the British government “has failed in its core aims to prevent people from using drugs, manufacturing drugs, and to put a stop to the crime, corruption, and death that is taking place on an industrial scale around the world.”
