Earlier this month, a psychopharmacological Journal reported that alcohol fuels aggression while marijuana reduces it. Met with resounding approval by all 420-fans and the employees of Weedmaps and Marijuana.com, this seemed like an opportune time to point out some of the more palpable and egregious disparities between sucking down hate juice (read: booze) at the end of a long hard work day, versus chilling out with a fat blunt or a tasty dab.
Alcohol Fuels Violent Crimes. Marijuana, Not So Much
As reported by the federal government’s National Institute of Health and the NIAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism), approximately 30% of today’s most heinous crimes committed in the U.S. are directly linked to alcohol consumption and financially burdening the courts, police, and prison system to the tune of $6.3 billion in 1998. Conversely, the feds have seemingly ignored marijuana consumption as it relates violence, as the use of cannabis has not been associated with cruelty, violence, or animosity. (Side note: the only crime associated with recreational marijuana consumption is directly linked the plant’s prohibited status.)
Marijuana’s CBD Cannabinoid Reduces Brain Damage Triggered by Alcohol
As discovered by researchers at the University of Kentucky, marijuana’s most popular medical cannabinoid, CBD, has demonstrated the unique ability to reduce brain damage caused by prolonged alcohol consumption. So, while booze wreaks havoc in the brains’s gray matter, science has proven CBD can treat alcohol-induced neurodegeneration.
Marijuana May Treat Liver Cancer Caused by Alcohol
Though most understand it intuitively, that weed is safer than alcohol, few comprehend that alcohol consumption is seriously carcinogenic, and can result in cancer of the head and neck, esophagus, liver, and breast. Racking up 3.3 million deaths worldwide during 2012, alcohol claimed responsibility for 5.1% of the total diseases and injuries worldwide. Meanwhile, marijuana’s medicinal cannabinoids have demonstrated the unique ability to help kill cancer cells and alleviate its devastating symptoms.
Alcohol Kills, Marijuana Cures
Per a recent post in Medical Daily, researchers for the CDC reported that alcohol is one of the more lethal substances currently available – killing approximately 90,000 people directly or indirectly during 2015. Cannabis, on the other hand, is one of the safest recreational substances, requiring thousands of times the dose one would use to get the desired effect to lead to death. Though marijuana, still considered a Schedule 1 narcotic by the DEA, kills zero annually, alcohol’s annual death rate has been integrated into society as an acceptable loss.
Only Marijuana Has Genuine Medicinal Uses
Despite the DEA’s long-standing resistance to accepting the medicinal applications for marijuana’s beneficial compounds – regardless of their current patents on cannabinoids as antioxidants – marijuana has established an extensive history of helping the sick and suffering. As for alcohol, aside from the antioxidants found in red wine, booze contributes little to a person’s overall health.
