Germinating the necessary signatures for a historic transformation in the Wolverine State on November 8, the Michigan marijuana legalization initiative handed over to the Secretary of State approximately 100k additional signatures than was necessary, potentially solidifying a spot on the ballot for Michigan’s campaign to legalize adult-use marijuana.
After their Memorial Day weekend push to harvest an additional 15,000 valid signatures, the chairman of MILegalize, Jeffrey Hank, proudly announced on Wednesday the campaign had gathered and handed over to the Secretary of State approximately 354,000 signatures in support of their initiative, according to Marijuana Business Daily. Smoking past the required number of 252,523 valid signatures from registered voters.
Per a 2014 poll on the legalization topic, 50% of Michigan’s likely voters said they would vote “yes” on a ballot proposal to legalize and tax recreational marijuana – with 46% voting “no” and 4% claiming to be undecided.
A virtual prerequisite for making it on the ballot, the additional 100,000 signatures will ensure Michigan’s adult-use campaign avoids Maine’s nearly catastrophic miss in their attempt to make it on the 2016 ballot. Put under the microscope of scrutiny Maine’s top election official originally cast doubt on thousands of petition signatures – dismissing them as null and void.
Looking to join the other progressive and forward thinking states at the polls on Election Day, Michigan’s voters hope to join Arizona, Arkansas, California, Massachusetts, and Missouri in converting their existing MMJ into full-blown legalization for the masses, come November 8th.
